FRANC2024: Advancing Patient-Centric Oncology Care
The Fresenius Kabi Advanced Nutrition Conference (FRANC2024) recently took place in Bad Homburg, Germany, bringing together over 100 experts, including oncologists, dieticians, nutritionists, and surgeons from 33 countries. This global gathering aimed to drive advancements in patient-centric oncology care through collaboration and innovation.
The conference featured engaging workshops and discussions led by Prof. Matti Aapro (Switzerland) and Prof. Vanessa Fuchs-Tarlovsky (Mexico). These sessions delved into real-world patient cases and shared best practices, highlighting the vital role of medical nutrition in enhancing outcomes for cancer patients across medical and surgical oncology.
Matti Aapro is member of the Board of Directors of the Genolier Cancer Center, Genolier,
Switzerland and of the Board of the International Union for Cancer Control (UICC). Dr. Aapro is
President of All.Can and President of Sharing Progress in Cancer Care (SPCC), both not-for-profit
associations. He serves the International Society for Geriatric Oncology (SIOG) as Executive Board Member. He is Past-President of the European Cancer Organisation and also Past-President of the Multinational Association for Supportive Care in Cancer (MASCC). He continues to collaborate with the European School of Oncology (ESO) as Scientific Advisor. He is member of the Board of the French-speaking Society for Supportive Care (AFSOS), as well as Advisor to the Japanese Association for Supportive Care in Cancer (JASCC). He has been member of the Board of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) and of the Board of the European Society of Medical Oncology (ESMO). He received his medical degree from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Geneva, Switzerland and was a fellow at the Arizona Cancer Center in Tucson, Arizona, USA. He was the founding chair of the Medical and Radiation Therapy Department at the European Institute of Oncology in Milan. His main interests are Breast Cancer, Cancer in the Elderly, Supportive care and Access to Treatment

Currently, Vanessa-Fuchs is the founder and head of the clinical nutrition department and a researcher at the Hospital General de Mexico in Mexico City.
She also works as a medical staff member at the American British Cowdray Medical Center and Angeles group of private hospitals and as a teacher at various universities in nutrition and medicine undergrad and postgraduate programs. Obtained grants for research in the clinical nutrition area focusing on oncology patients. She has published more than 115 articles in national and international journals and has been an international speaker around the world.

Stein Kaasa is an MD with specialisation in medical oncology, radiotherapy and palliative medicine. In 1993 he was appointed as the first Professor in palliative medicine in Scandinavia. He has been the National Cancer Director in Norway, president of EAPC, the leader of the EAPC Research Network and the coordinator for earlier EU-funded projects.
Currently he is the leader of the European Palliative Care Research Centre (PRC) at Oslo University Hospital, one of the larger cancer centres in Europe and an OECI designated centre, and Professor of Oncology and Palliative Medicine at the University of Oslo. He is the coordinator of the MyPath project; an innovation- and implementation research project funded by the EU. He is also the work package leader in several other EU-funded projects, such as the Joint Action JANE2 and the EU initiative against cancer; EuonQoL. He is involved in several research collaborative and international partnerships on research and policy development. Professor Kaasa has been an important advocate for evidence-based practice and has worked extensively to get palliative care and patient centred care research on the agenda, both nationally and internationally. For the last decades he has also been involved in the development of national and international guidelines for cancer treatment. Professor Kaasa has published 579 articles and book chapters with an H index of 104. He has authored the Nordic Textbook of Palliative Care and is co-author and editor of the Oxford Textbook of Palliative Medicine.
Prof. Stanislaw Klek, MD, PhD, is a specialist in general and cancer surgery. He works as the Head of the Surgical Oncology Clinic as well Medical Director at the National Cancer Institute in Krakow. He is also the Head of the Intestinal Failure Center at Stanley Dudrick’s Memorial Hospital in Skawina, Poland
Stanislaw Klek has published more than 200 original articles, 30 case reports, 18 book chapters, and over 100 congress abstracts. He was one of the first recipients of the European ESPEN Diploma (2010) and one of the first ESPEN LLL Teachers (2008). He was the Chairman of the Polish Society for Parenteral, Enteral Nutrition and Metabolism (POLSPEN) between 2010-2022. Member of ESPEN Special Interest Group on Acute Intestinal Failure. Associate Editor for Clinical Nutrition and other ESPEN journals (since 2013). Chairman of the International Section of American Society for Enteral and Parenteral Nutrition (ASPEN, 2019-21) and President of the 41st ESPEN Congress in 2019. Co-director of ESPEN LLL (since 2021).

Robert Greene, holding both British and Dutch citizenship, is an impassioned patient advocate and speaker dedicated to promoting a patient-centered approach across the entire healthcare journey. Drawing on his extensive expertise, he strives to educate others about the pivotal role of patient involvement and engagement. In his roles as a consultant, speaker, and patient advocate, he works towards fostering collaboration among a diverse range of stakeholders, encompassing industry entities and patient advocacy groups. Following a bout with chemotherapy's side effects from 2012 to 2013, Robert delved deeply into advocacy, becoming a vocal champion for cancer patients and survivors. He founded the HungerNdThirst Foundation and assumes positions of influence in esteemed organizations like the ASCO Foundation Grants Selection Committee and the GSK Health Advisory Board.
Prof. Cindy Neuzillet is M.D., Ph.D., H.D.R., head of GI Oncology at Curie Institute, Saint Cloud, France.
She was board certified in Hepato-Gastro-Enterology in 2013 and in Oncology in 2014. After an Oncology fellowship in Paris, she spent 18 months at Barts Cancer Institute (Prof. Kocher’s lab) in London, and then 15 months at Center for Cancer Research of Toulouse (Dr. Bousquet’s lab), for her Ph.D., aiming at establishing a classification of cancer-associated fibroblasts in pancreatic cancer (J Pathol 2019, awarded by the Jass Prize for Research Excellence 2019; and J Pathol 2022). Her research work is focused on interactions between tumor cells, stromal cells, and intra-tumoral microbiota in pancreatic and biliary tract cancers.
She is a lead member of the PRODIGE Pancreatic and Biliary Tract Cancers working group for clinical trials and national PI of several multicenter trials in this field. She co-led the working group of national guidelines for pancreatic cancer management in France (TNCD, Dig Liver Dis 2018), for cholangiocarcinoma management (AFEF 2022), and for nutrition/physical activity in GI cancers (TNCD, BMJ Support Palliat Care 2021). She is past President of the French Pancreatic Club (CFP) and President of the French Association for Biliary Tract Cancer and Diseases (ACABi), chair of the Pancreatic Cancer EORTC task force and member of the scientific committee of the French National Association of Nutrition and Metabolism (SFNCM).
Dr. Jann Arends is board certified in internal medicine, gastroenterology and hematology/oncology with subspecialties in clinical nutrition and palliative care. After specialist training and doctoral degree at the University of Göttingen, Germany, he spent 3 years as a research fellow at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, U.S.A. Since 1993, he served as consultant and head of the nutrition service at Tumor Biology Center in Freiburg. Since 2015, he is a Consultant in Palliative Care at Medical Center, University of Freiburg, Germany. His clinical expertise and main areas of research are metabolic and nutritional problems in cancer patients. Dr. Arends is the leading author of the German national guidelines on clinical nutrition in oncology (2015), and both of the European ESPEN guidelines on nutrition in cancer patients (2017) as well as the more recently published ESMO clinical practice guidelines on cancer cachexia (2021). He serves as chair of the Nutrition and Metabolism Working Group of the German Society of Hematology and Oncology and he is a member of the ESPEN task force on nutrition and cancer and a member of the Teaching Faculty of several scientific societies, e.g. DGVS, ESPEN, ESO.
Aleksandra Kapała, MD, PhD, is the Head of Department of Oncology Diagnostics, Cardio-Oncology and Palliative Medicine at the Maria Skłodowska-Curie National Research Institute of Oncology in Warsaw. She is responsible for overseeing oncology diagnostics, cardio-oncology, and palliative medicine. Dr Aleksandra Kapala has been associated with the Maria Skłodowska-Curie National Research Institute of Oncology from 2013 until 2021, where she has made significant
contributions to the fields of oncology and clinical nutrition. Dr. Aleksandra Kapala is widely recognized for her expertise in clinical nutrition,medical oncology, and micronutrients in oncology. Dr. rer.biol.hum. Nicole Erickson, Registered Dietitian (USA), and is a Research Scientist and Coordinator of Health Competency at the Comprehensive Cancer Center, Ludwig Maximilian
University of Munich. She spent 5 years the associated Comprehensive Cancer Center at the Technical Universtiy of Munich before transferring to the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich in 2017. There, she leads the oncology clinical nutrition team, and a research team focusing on supportive care throughout the cancer trajectory. She has made significant contributions to the field of oncology nutrition and patient-centered care throughout her career. Dr. Erickson is widely recognized for her expertise in nutrition, cancer prevention, patient centered care, and interdisciplinary supportive care. She has received numerous awards and honors, including the Bavarian Cancer Patient Prize (1st Place) awarded by the Bavarian Cancer Society in November 2022, and the VDD Award for outstanding contributions to the field of dietetics by the German Dietetic Association in 2021, Emerging Dietetic Leader of the Year, Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, AODA, 2013, and a Fulbright grant in 1997. Dr. Erickson is actively involved in professional activities and leadership roles, and is, for example, a delegate for the European Cancer Organization Task Force (ECO) and the European Federation of the Associations of Dietitians (EFAD).
Dr. Erickson focuses on establishing a link between nutrition in practice and research. She has
authored over 65 publications, including peer-reviewed articles, professional journals, and books, and book chapters. She has also served on editorial boards andis well known for her effective presentations at international and national conferences.
Florian Scotté is a Physician and Medical Oncologist. M.D.Ph.D. He is the Head Cancer Patient Pathway Division at Gustave Roussy, Villejuif, France and MASCC President Elect. He is founder and coordinator of the annual international congress TAO-Cancer Toxicity Management since 2010. Florian Scotté is the Associate Editor British Medical Journal Supportive and Palliative Care since 2019 and s Author or co-author of 154 publications in international journals (Pubmed to January 18, 2024).
